美国的专门评估认证机构是经过政府认可的非营利性的社会组织。一个认证机构的资格合法性，需要联邦教育部和高等教育认证协会(chea)的共同确认。chea是一个全国性的大学评估认证机构。美国还拥有多家地区性的非政府评估认证机构，比较大的是分设在六个区域的认证协会，如位于旧金山的美国西部院校协会(wasc)，位于麻省的新英格兰院校协会(neasc)。参与评估认证的学校自愿进行，参加评估的同行专家也是志愿性的，专职人员很少，多为兼职。
